During his tenure as a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, del Olmo raised a wide range of issues affecting the Latino community. During his 34 years with the Los Angeles Times, he had held a number of positions, including foreign correspondent, deputy editor of the editorial page, columnist, Times-Mirror Foundation director and assistant to the editor of The Times. He was part of a team of reporters, editors and photographers that produced the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for meritorious public service series "Southern California's Latino Community."
Named associate editor in 1999, del Olmo led a newspaper wide effort to improve coverage of Latinos called the "Latino Initiative."
Del Olmo won an Emmy for a 1975 documentary on illegal immigration. He also was named a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 1987. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) inducted del Olmo into its Hall of Fame in 2002.
To honor del Olmo's legacy, the California Chicano News Media Association established the Frank del Olmo Memorial Scholarship Fund and NAHJ created the Frank del Olmo Print Journalist of the Year Award.
