NAMME's New Home

On August 1, the NAMME staff moved to the Gannett Co. Inc./USA Today complex at 7950 Jones Branch Drive in McLean, Va., from its former headquarters at 1921 Gallows Road in nearby Vienna, Va.

Spearheaded by Jose Berrios, Gannett’s vice president of leadership development and diversity, and a member of NAMME’s Board of Directors, the relocation provides NAMME with expanded office space, updated telecommunications and free parking on the same floor as the staff of UNITY: Journalists of Color. NAMME has signed a three-year, conditional lease with Gannett that expires July 27, 2009. 

NAMME resides in the Gannett portion of the 25-acre footprint made up of 12 stories; USA TODAY comprises nine stories in the other wing. The entire complex houses 1,781 employees within its 800,000 square feet of workspace.

Shortly after its completion in June 2001, the building garnered numerous accolades and architecture awards for its elegant construction, which features a glass-skin exterior with glass fins and glass elevator shafts. The building appears to change colors when viewed from different angles at different times of day. Innovative, commissioned artwork, including the world’s longest neon-art installation, fill the public areas, while large color photographs first published in USA TODAY line the walls in the office space.

Some of the amenities found on the “campus” include: a 400-person-capacity cafeteria; a two-story fitness center; two tennis courts, basketball courts and sand-pit volleyball courts; a softball field; concierge service; credit union, and a leafy, mile-long walking/jogging path.
