Small Messages Can Lead to Big Impact in the Workplace

Stephen Young

Author and organizational-development specialist Stephen Young proved that the adage, “Actions speak louder than words” still holds true, particularly in the workplace. During a powerful and often humorous session at NAMME's annual conference on Thursday, July 13, Young used body language to demonstrate—through something as simple as a business introduction—that the introducer can easily convey a positive or negative impression of the person being introduced. He calls these actions “micro-messages.”

Typically, we send between 2,000 and 4,000 positive and negative “micro-messages” in a business day. They have a powerful influence on driving the behavior of all those with whom we interact ultimately impair performance in the workplace at all levels in an organization, according to Young.

Yet, it's these very messages that often cause colleagues who receive them to question their value and ultimately their commitment to a business. "MicroInequities: The Power of Small", developed based upon research conducted at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, focuses on the effects of micro-messages in the workplace.

Young complemented a roster of dynamic thinkers from the fields of new media, marketing, executive development and entertainment at NAMME's 13 th Annual Conference, July 11-13 th in Washington, D.C.
