Kim Young-Taylor
Publisher
Carolina Newspaper
Kim Young-Taylor could be on a stage, singing in a Broadway musical. She has an incredible gift of voice. Instead, Young-Taylor notes singing as a hobby and since 2002, she has been the publisher of the Yorkville Enquirer and The Clover Herald, weekly newspapers in York County, South Carolina. Young-Taylor became the first black female publisher of a mainstream newspaper in the state when she was promoted from general manager. "Diversity is an issue that is core to my heart", said Young. "The industry is doing a better job of hiring and retaining people of color. We still have a way to go, but the efforts that have been put in place are tremendous."
Young finds the most challenging aspect of her job - balancing workflow - also the most rewarding. "I love being involved in news operations. Working at weekly newspapers requires me to be very diverse in my talents and skills. Publishing allows me to continue learning about our industry." Being a part of all publishing, editorial, advertising, marketing and circulation functions has made Young-Taylor a well-rounded media executive. "I have been in the newspaper industry for 14 years. Basically, this industry raised me. And I'm excited about the future. There are new and exciting technologies, marketing trends and advertising streams popping up daily. We have our challenges with readership and decreased circulation; however, this industry is smart enough to think of sustaining measures."
