Professional Development Programs for Media Managers

American Press Institute Executive Development Programs for Metro & Community Newspapers

This five-day program, designed for newspaper executives from all departments and at many levels, uses API's new Windows-based computer simulation to generate real-life management situations that help participants develop strategic and operational plans for a mythical 40,000-circulation suburban newspaper and a mythical 220,000-circulation metropolitan newspaper. Participants gain an appreciation for the complexities of the publisher's job, a better understanding of all departments of the newspaper, an opportunity to set long-term objectives and establish priorities and more. EDP takes place twice a year at API's facility in Reston, VA, just outside of Washington, DC.

Asian American Journalists Association Executive Leadership Program

ELP is designed to help Asian American journalists become newsroom leaders and executives. This intensive three-and-a-half day program gives participants an increased understanding of the corporate environment and leadership role in the newsroom. Participants learn how Asian American values can be assets, or liabilities, for executive performance and develop individual career paths to leadership positions. ELP is a three-and-a-half day program held once a year in various cities.

Asian American Journalists Association /New York Times Fellowship for the Maynard Institute

In an effort to increase the number of Asian American media executives, The New York Times has generously offered to help one AAJA member attend the Maynard Institute's Maynard Management @ Kellogg. Maynard Management @ Kellogg is a four-week program that offers participants a total-immersion curriculum covering all facets of newspaper management. The fellowship is awarded annually to one AAJA print member with at least five years of journalism experience. The fellowship covers the training fee to the program.

Asian American Journalists Association/Poynter Institute Fellowship

In conjunction with the Poynter Institute of Media Studies, the Asian American Journalists Association offers management training fellowships for mid-career members. Applicants should be full-time employees of a print, broadcast, or online news organization, or journalism educators. Tuition and hotel costs are covered by Poynter, and transportation by AAJA.

Media Management Center's Advanced Executive Program

AEP is an intensive, four-week program for senior leaders of media companies. Top business and journalism faculty explore critical management issues and interactively teach leadership skills. The Center's curriculum concentrates on five areas: strategy, journalism, marketing, critical decision-making and leadership. AEP is broken up into two two-week segments and meets each spring at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.

Media Management Center's Management Development Program

MDP is a rigorous nine-day program for new or future leaders with substantial work experience. The goal of this program is to give the participant an understanding of management across the functions of the newspaper. Curriculum includes strategic implementation, understanding the marketing mindset, the value and role of journalism, and financial analysis and leadership skills. This course is especially valuable to the executive who is new to newspapers or to the newspaper departmental leaders who is expected to take on projects or responsibilities with other departments. MDP takes place once a year in June at Northwestern University is Evanston, IL.

Newspaper Association of America's Breakthrough
The James K. Batten Leadership and Career Development Program for Mid- and Senior-Level Professionals

This program is an effort to develop the next generation of newspaper industry leaders. Breakthrough, based on a one-on-one partnership between mid-career and executive-level newspaper professionals who communicate and interact on a regular basis over a year-long period, is aimed at enhancing leadership skills, outlining career strategies and discussing the future directions of the industry. Talented people of color have the opportunity to augment their knowledge and be mentored. The training session begins with the annual NAA publishers convention and concludes at the convention the following year.

Newspaper Association of America New Media Fellowship

Fellows participate in this year-long program, which provides a variety of instructional and learning projects and exercises to build a strong foundation of knowledge in the new media arena. This program gives woman and newspaper professionals of color a strong working knowledge of new media and its relevant applications in the newspaper industry.Fellows participate in a conference for new media professionals and two three-day training workshops.

National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation
Broadcast Leadership Training Program

This is an MBA-style program targeted to proven senior level broadcast managers who aspire to advance as group executives or station owners. The program focuses on the process of assessing, purchasing, owning and operating radio and television stations, providing a blueprint for successful entrepreneurs in other industries to make the transition to broadcasting. The program provides talented business people the specific knowledge and skills relevant to owning and operating radio and television stations. Participants learn how to become a greater part of the industry and increase the diversity of voices available to the public. Participants meet one weekend a month for ten months from September through June at NAB headquarters in Washington, DC.

MDS is for senior executives from a television station, group or network. Albert E. Fitzpatrick Leadership Development Institute

LDI, for new and middle media managers of color, helps them succeed by helping them to develop effective management skills while candidly addressing why managers sometimes fail or become stalled in their careers. Participants sharpen their leadership skills and learn how to develop their careers while successfully contributing to the goals of their organizations. LDI provides an environment in which managers can focus on personal and professional values plus the strengths of character and cultural traits that will enhance their positions as leaders in their organizations and communities. LDI is a three-day hands-on program, is offered twice a year in the Spring and Fall in partnership with different media organizations and associations across the country.

McCormick Tribune Fellowship

The Fellowship, an innovative executive development program for high-performing senior managers and executives of color in the news media, is designed to increase both the number and the impact of influential minority executives in the news business. More than just an executive training program, the program offers fellows a multifaceted experience designed not only to help the fellows individually in their careers but also to give other news media leaders the benefit of the wisdom and insights the fellows have to offer. Fellows attend the premier leadership programs for media executives, the four-week Advanced Executive Program (AEP) and the seven-day Management Development Seminar, both conducted at the Media Management Center at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. MM@K teaches fellows, from the editorial and business departments of the newspaper industry, what it takes to operate effectively in a multicultural and multimedia marketplace. This program offers fellows a hands-on multifaceted curriculum in financial management and budgeting, organization behavior, media convergence, human resources, advertising, marketing, business operations and editorial processes. One facet of this program is a four-day newspaper field-site experience that gives the fellows a first-hand look at the real life application of the management principles they learn. MM@K provides fellows the skills they need to motivate, negotiate and communicate in a multicultural, multimedia workplace. MM@K is a five-week program that takes place at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management in Evanston, IL each summer.
